People who drive 45 and then speed up to 95 when someone tries to pass, why do you do that?

I have noticed that most of the time it's purely accidental by people who do it. Think I've only ever encountered two, maybe three drivers who have done it deliberately. A lot of the times people just don't notice how fast or slow they are driving until someone passes them, and also, when you've been driving for some stretch of time one tends to get "speed blindness", and don't check the speedometer often enough. Secondly, a lot of drivers tend to subconsciously match speeds of other vehicles that are in front of them or beside them. In both cases, usually when people notice their mistake, they will correct it. Like when people will overtake you, just to then slow down...

I call it fishing for idiots, see how fast you can get them up to before their passenger/spouse freaks out on them.

Which brings up the question, why aren’t the using cruise control? I know your car has it.

1

u/VeryAwkwardLadyBoner Sep 26 '22

I always use it. But not every car has it. People who are driving around in old beaters, or stickshifts of a certain age. And don't get me started on how easy it is for cruise control to just.. Not work. Like because of faulty tire sensors that can be very expensive to replace depending on where you live.

And then there's folk who just don't want to use it, or because they don't know how.

I was trying to make an exit once and this lady was making it a hell of a time for whatever reason. There was a thick string of cars behind her and I already tried slowing down to let her move ahead but no dice. I finally got fed up and gassed it, I don’t like to push my car for no reason and as I drove past her I gave her the finger, which I almost never bother doing, and she had her own finger already up. It was such an absurd interaction I burst out laughing.

There are times when I space out while driving and don't notice that the speed limit has changed from 50 to 55 until someone passes me, so I speed up from 50 to 55. But I don't understand the thing about people not wanting others to pass them. People pass me all the time because I drive the speed limit (instead of 10-15 over like most drivers here). I don't mind at all.

Please stay out of California.

I second this, I’ve been advertising people to steer clear of California for years

You forgot to add the part about spacing out while driving in the passing lane; you know what the passing lane is?

3

u/stdio-lib Sep 25 '22

Nah, I'm a right-lane-only guy. The one time I'll violate the speed limit is when I'm passing people -- I'll go 15 over in those cases and then I'm back in the right lane doing the speed limit again.

There could be a few reasons why someone would do this. Maybe they are trying to be aggressive and show that they are not going to let anyone pass them. Or, they could be trying to intimidate the other driver into not passing them. Additionally, they might simply be impatient and want to get ahead of the other driver as soon as possible.

Since I prefer driving state and US highways instead of interstates, the other one I love is when cars suddenly go 10 over when a passing lane starts, then when it ends they're back down to 5 under. Another favorite is when you pass someone, and then they speed match you for the next 53.5 miles.

Some of it is in my head, I'm sure. Not all of it though.

Immature with control issues

Iam a HGV driver, this happens regularly, I indicate, pull out, they speed up, I pull in behind, they slow down, this can happen several times before I actually get to overtake, normally on a good down hill stretch. Infuriating!!!.

Because they’re fucking dicks

u/Elliott_Ness1970 Sep 25 '22

I was going to ask this exact question. It’s obviously a universal thing. I’m UK but lots of answers are US. I don’t drive particularly quickly and not aggressively at all but when on a dual carriageway and people have been driving slower than the speed limit but when you’re overtaking they speed up. Not sure why they would do this. I only bother overtaking if they are going slow. I then have to go over to get past because sure as shit they are going to slow down as soon as the road goes to single carriageway. Im sure it’s the same type of person that blocks one of the lanes when there is two lanes of stationary traffic and they want to prevent people zippering for some weird reason.

I'm not just taking a trip to the grocery store, I'm taking an ego trip to the grocery store.

3

u/lodger238 Sep 25 '22

Because I'm stupid and I have issues with my ego.

3

u/JackThreeFingered Sep 25 '22

Most of the time I'm going the speed limit or even a bit over, and some jackass starts tailgating me. I notice and then I try to speed up but before I know it, the jackass is going around and trying to pass me, so it LOOKS like I'm doing it on purpose. But I was actually responding to the jackass who was tailgating me.

u/Cannacology Sep 25 '22

I think it’s typically about control. Or they totally didn’t notice how slow they were driving.

-4

u/Jinxy_Kat Sep 25 '22

Wouldn't the person passing be the control freak. Since they have to pass all the other cars? And also if you're going like 100 than maybe getting you need slowed down it's safer for everyone.

7

u/Redstar-86 Sep 25 '22

How is going past another car that's moving slower than you, in any way being a control freak?

This topic is about people who drive way under the speed limit and then speed up anytime someone rightfully tries to passt hem, because they were driving too slow.

0

u/Jinxy_Kat Sep 25 '22

Obviously you don't live in state where you could be going 80 while some dumbass is going 100 weaving in and out if traffic like he's God's gift.

2

u/qzcl Sep 25 '22

Entitlement. Think they own the road

You are definitely Armenian lol

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '22

I don't know--maybe I'm just feeling assholish at that particular time--nothing personal.

-7

u/Jinxy_Kat Sep 25 '22

Cause if you're gonna Rev your engine and be an obnoxious ass. I'm going to speed up just enough to not let you pass so you know you're not more special. If that makes you mad than I assume you've got issues considering you had to almost cut someone off to get ahead by one car.

3

u/D34TH_5MURF__ Sep 25 '22

You can try, but I'll laugh as I go by, and assume you have no sense of safety or care about others and have some serious control issues. It's really more than an assumption, since speeding up like that increases the danger significantly and is downright reckless, especially on two lane roads.

-1

u/Jinxy_Kat Sep 25 '22

Yea and cutting someone off going 100 with a really safe. I'll be going 80 and still have dumbasses like you speeding up acting a fool just to get one car ahead. Y'all obviously live in very slow driving states, but where I'm at I can go 10+ above the speed limit and still have people like you thinking they gotta be somewhere faster.

1

u/D34TH_5MURF__ Sep 25 '22

I have seen my fair share of drivers in most states in the US. Tennessee drivers are the fastest, I've found. 15 over is about the norm the TN. I tend to drive relaxed, and I follow the speed limit as well as anyone. I just have enough engine power to know I will easily pass almost anyone. It's annoying when the speed I was going when I caught up to you, turns out to suddenly not be enough when I pull out to pass. So, instead of one car going really fast to pass, there are two cars going really fast side by side for a longer period of time. You have literally made the situation more dangerous because you got your panties in a wad. The issue is with you, not the person passing.

1

u/Jinxy_Kat Sep 25 '22

I live in FL and if you ain't going 85 you should be in slow lane. If I'm going 90 and that's still not fast enough maybe hit the brakes and drive with some sense.

1

u/D34TH_5MURF__ Sep 26 '22

Oh, I do drive with some sense. 85 is not sense, nor is 90. You can pass right on by me. I'll move to the right and slow down to let you zoom right on by. If, by some chance, you were not going 90, and I caught you, I would definitely speed past you ASAP and I doubt you'd be able to prevent it. Anyway, random internet dude, I'm ok letting you have the bigger reddit penis. You win.

Sometimes the urge to be an asshole just becomes too much and i cant help it. Its good for my mental health, nothing personal.

1

u/NightLK Sep 25 '22

Because it’s a 30 road.

1

u/daniu Sep 25 '22

I drive speed limit. Speed limit changes from 45 to 95. I accelerate. Impatient driver behind me is already overtaking.

I do slow down in this situation of course to let them finish their maneuver, nothing to be gained for anyone by putting them into danger. I'll usually see them again at the next red light.

1

u/platitood Sep 25 '22

People who drive up my ass, then pull into my lane and slow to 45, I have the same question.

Maybe these people could negotiate a compromise.

1

u/PigletPC20 Sep 25 '22

To avoid that awkward eye contact when you look at each other as the other passes.

-1

u/Babbles-82 Sep 25 '22

No one does that.

People who exaggerate, why do you do that?

-4

u/ddmyssc Sep 25 '22

'cause fuck you that's why.

-2

Sometimes I’m just petty like that. I have to work on it
